Prayas Vidyalaya

Objective

To provide an ongoing, continuous regular school education to community children allowing them to pursue their academic aspirations.

Our Work

A journey that started in 2005 by supporting a few teenage boys in learning Mathematics & Hindi is currently at a juncture where we have touched life of more than 150 slum community children at Sector 16, Noida. We have seen many moments of excitement and gloom during this journey.

 Prayas Vidyalaya

We achieved our first milestone when we successfully admitted 21 children in nearby government school. Later on, we collaborated with another school called “Nai Disha Free Education Society” in 2008 and got the first batch of 5 students admitted to this school. From there on, we were able to get 20-30 children admitted per year in the same school. However, we started to realize that the work is only half-done as these children require continuous support and that much more was need to be done because there are more than 500 children in community waiting for quality education.

Our slow and steady approach led us to a juncture where we have taken a big leap and started our own self-sustainable, low cost, high quality education centre managed by local community which we call “Prayas Vidyalaya”. Prayas Vidyalaya was formally inaugurated on April 01, 2012 inside the slum community. All these years we have learnt that it is equally important to understand their families & circumstances and impart practical education to the children in community. Prayas Vidyalaya is a school inside the slum community, run for the community residents.

Vidyalaya is currently being operated out of a three small room facility inside the slum community. The school has started with classes KG, Ist and IInd; and will be expanded by one class every year until Class V. Academic curriculum from Nai Disha school has been adopted and children will take up examination through NIOS. A core management committee including senior volunteers, local community people and experienced people from Nai Disha has been formed who will setup the roadmap and manage the overall affairs of Vidyalaya. Our existing teacher “Mrs. Jyoti Khare” has been appointed as the principal of Vidyalaya and there are three more teachers who are taking care of the school and academics.  Class at Prayas

There are 67 Kids studying this current session (2012-13) in Prayas Vidyalaya and we are aiming for the greater level of participation & success in near future when there will be classes till VIIIth and we will reach most needy children of the community and will be able to provide Quality education to them.

Prayas Vidyalaya is a significant step forward in our quest of better education for slum community children. While we are very excited with this step, we are also aware that we need more support than ever.
